Walkability, urban living and proximity to Lake of the Isles is why many people seek out this historic neighborhood.
The history of Lowry Hill East begins in the 1880's when it was one of the City's first suburbs served by Thomas Lowry's horse-drawn street cars. During the 1880's houses of varying sizes and styles were built to attract both the elite and the middle class away from the smells and noise of downtown. Also, in the decades between 1880 and 1910, the population was exploding from an influx of both European emigrants and adventurous Easterners looking for the American dream. Two building booms in 1892-1893 and 1901-1903 helped create the Lowry Hill East of today. Most of the homes were built in this era.
The interior of the neighborhood is residential, with large early 20th century homes and multi-unit apartment buildings, while the border streets are lined with bars, restaurants, grocery stores, coffeeshops, and other small businesses. With 9,298 (2020 census) residents, most housing is renter-occupied. ~270 single family houses, 200, duplexes, 545 condos, and the remaining apartment buildings.
The Lowry Hill East historic district provides a glimpse into the enduring legacy of famed architect T.P. Healy. As in most neighborhoods, buildings have changed over time; most recently, there has been significant expansion of residential housing along the business corridors and the Greenway that has enlivened these areas. At the heart of the neighborhood is Mueller Park, named after brothers Robert and Herbert, residents and environmental stewards who served as natural historians of the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is bounded on the east by Lyndale Avenue, on the west by Hennepin Avenue and on the south by Lake Street. Lyndale and Hennepin intersect on the northern side at Interstate 94. This creates a neighborhood roughly triangular in shape, which is how it gets its nickname, "the Wedge." It is part of a larger area south of Franklin Avenue and west of Nicollet Avenue that is often considered Uptown, although officially Uptown is a smaller area centered on the intersection of Hennepin and Lake.
